CD REVIEW - 'The Art of Lounge - Volume 3'

Readings - Port Melbourne
This Sydney diva has carved a highly entertaining niche in the twilight zone between jazz and 'lounge' (whatever that actually is.) Her breathy voice, superb timing and razor-sharp band are back by popular demand with another installment in this fabulous franchise. Hyperbole aside, you get neat small-group and strings arrangements of jazz standards and torch songs. Try to resist her 'Lullaby of Birdland'. Just try!

Cadence Review (USA)

June 2004
This is the third CD Australian vocalist Janet Seidel has dedicated to the 'Art Of Lounge.'There's no explanation anywhere of what makes this so much a lounge set.

Maybe it's the use of lush string arrangements or songs from the easy-listening side of the Fifties.

Whatever the reason, this CD again shows what a fine singer Seidel is. Her sunny, coquettish voice sounds right at home on this material giving a velvety sheen to the work done by her combo and the string section.

She puts over sentimental romance well on 'Trolley Song' and 'Over The Rainbow' and demonstrates her talent for swinging subtly on 'Cow Cow Boogie' and 'Lullaby Of Birdland.'

Seidel is the kind of singer who makes it all sound effortless.

This is a fine showcase for her.

Few Australian vocalists convey the piano bar feel better. it is the Seidel signature and as always she covers plenty of ground at an easy pace: some swing here some Cuban there a bit of samba and ballads all presented with changing configuration of backing line-ups from duos to sextets with strings. It is a relaxed sound that is deceptively simple despite the carefully constructed layers.

Seidel understands the lyric and her phrasing, dragging out a word here or repeating a line, makes it come alive on tracks such as The Trolley song turned into a samba and Lullaby of Birdland.

Love cute and refreshing vocals?

It seems there is a nostalgic atmosphere existing somewhere in Australia which nurtures a singer such as Janet.

Her vocals are sincere and straightforward and she makes the most of the original melody's beauty.

Vocals as lounge music: this is a rare and excellent album you can be content with.

Janet is one of the few artists who succeed to deliver the legacy of female vocals such as Doris Day and Peggy Lee.

With her sweet tone colour and nostalgic singing style she easily entertains anyone. In romantic ballads the dreamy strings impress as do her lilting vocals reminiscent of American singers of the 50's. 'More of the exquisite pop singing of Australia's latter day Doris Day.

She maintains her classic and sentimental vocal style that was handed over from the white American females who were prominent in the 50s: and it's extremely valuable today.

This album enables us to discover her charm in full measure.

Don't know which female vocalist is worthy to chose?

Must have this one. It's rich in contents.

The therapeutic jazz vocalist Number 1: Janet Seidel's long awaited new album is out now.

Well, what can I say?

Janet Seidel is my sunshine. When I am gloomy, I listen to her songs. Soon I find myself being cheered up. It's like the rays of sun breaking through the clouds.
